How to Prepare Your Home for Exterior Painting
Most of the prep on an exterior paint job belongs to the painters — washing, scraping, patching, caulking, and priming. But a few things on the homeowner's side make the whole project smoother.
Before the crew arrives
- Trim back shrubs and branches touching the walls so there's room to work
- Move patio furniture, grills, and potted plants away from the house
- Turn off sprinklers that spray the walls for the duration of the project
- Point out any known leaks, soft wood, or areas that stay damp
- Make sure gates and side yards are accessible, and secure pets
Decisions worth making early
- Body, trim, and door colors — including whether the trim changes too
- Sheen for body versus trim
- Whether soffits, fascia, garage doors, and fences are included
- Any repairs to handle before paint, such as siding or trim damage
Weather
In the Valley, heat and humidity both affect dry and recoat times, and afternoon storms can interrupt a day. A schedule with some flexibility built in usually produces a better result than one forced to finish on a fixed date.
